Thank you for viewing. This is a framed chromolithograph from an antique botanical atlas. It is an excerpt from the botanical encyclopedia Naturgeschichte für die Jugend beiderlei Geschlechts, drawn by Carl Hoffmann in Germany in 1899 and published by Franck'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung. This image is a botanical illustration of medicinal and useful plants from the Rosaceae family (Common Hawthorn, Quince, Japanese Quince, Dog Rose). The plants from the Rosaceae family depicted in this illustration have a history of being valued for health and diet in the herb gardens of European monasteries and home gardens since ancient times. Created between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it is a chromolithograph, a color printing technique that improved and developed lithography, using a highly colorful and detailed artistic style. The names of the plants are inscribed in Czech, German, and Latin at the bottom of the illustration. This plate can be considered valuable botanical art, combining scientific accuracy and artistic quality of the time. Originals of this kind are now difficult to obtain, making it a highly collectible item. As this is an antique item approximately 126 years old, there may be some discoloration or minor stains on the paper.
